everal years ago I had the privilege of translating and designing the English version of a special cookery book. That was the historically significant recipes of the last royal dynasty of the Kandyan Kingdom in Ceylon. The initiator of that project, the late Mr.Ananda S. Pilimatalavuva was instrumental in urging the publication of another cookery book, though of a different nature. That was a book containing my mother’s recipes. Begun in 2009, the book had to be postponed many times due to my other professional commitments. So, it is with a real sense of achievement that I announce the book has now been published by Vijitha Yapa Publications. The cookery book contains 250 tried-and-tested recipes spanning over 50 years, backed up with 24 colour pages containing photographs of the various dishes. The book also contains home economy tips, nutrition values of 24 ingredients and practical advice on home gardening within limited urban spaces. You can view some images of the book on this website on the Books and CD Covers Designs page. The page layouts, photographs and cover design were all done with the prospective reader in mind. We avoided using formal-looking crockery in the photo shoots as we want readers to be convinced that the recipes are practical with a home-spun quality. In fact, most of the food was consumed directly after photographing them as part of our breakfast, lunch or dinner at home. The recipes which are suitable for vegetarians are indicated by a special symbol placed at the top of the relevant pages. Those of you readers who are vegetarians will be happy to know that there are many such pages in this book. Altogether, the book contains 424 pages of A5 size (14.8 cm x 21 cm). The colour pages have been printed on coated paper with a gloss finish, thereby bringing out the colours and textures of the subject matter. We decided to offer a paperback version as well as a hard cover version, so potential readers could select according to their budget. We are hoping to publish an English version later on. In the meantime, if you are Sinhala literate you can see a preview of some of the pages, including the contents pages of the book at my mother’s website. You can also purchase the book via a link to the listing on the Vijitha Yapa on-line bookstore and read about her other books as well. |
